BERKELEY INNOVATION

I established a completely new brand identity from the ground up for Berkeley Innovation’s Fall 2022 semester. I led all brand and marketing campaigns including visual designs for recruitment events, website redesign, and proejct showcase event. I also led social media strategy including advertising and DEI outreach.

Berkeley Innovation is a human centered design consultancy and UC Berkeley‘s first student-run design organization since 2003.

Berkeley Innovation was built for growing designers by growing designers.

Berkeley Innovation (BI) aims to provide educational opportunities to the students at UC Berkeley by connecting students with clients and projects. It was up to the marketing team to spread the word and bring these opportunities to the students who seek them. We decided to lean into our mascot (the orange) and its friends (the fruits) but add an unexpected hazy retro futuristic twist. The dark backgrounds allowed the fruits and information to shine while the VHS textures and pixels immerses the viewers into a retro world of BI.

A few historic problem that needed tackling:

lack of diversity

Despite BI's numerous educational initiatives, only members are granted access to the client project initiative. However, a major roadblock we've identified is the lack of diversity among our membership, which can result in marginalization, miscommunication, and echo chambers. We believe that diversifying the industry begins with education. That's why we're taking a stand to address our lack of diversity. Our marketing team is stepping up to identify and connect with those who can benefit most from BI, in order to pave the way for a more inclusive and equitable future.

intimidation

Despite being a close-knit community, aspiring designers at UC Berkeley found BI intimidating, which prevented some from applying and hindered others from seeking information. This was a significant problem that hindered our ability to provide educational resources. To address this, my marketing team took bold action to make BI more welcoming, fun, and friendly, while still staying true to our brand.
